Romancing The Past & Forgetting The Reality

  • Sep 19, 2010 from maruskamorena(Maruska Morena) in *
maruskamorena Today I was doing cleaning to prepare for company next week. Im actually working on those New Years resolutions, as well as moving things around to make the apt as spacious as possible.
Ive still got a crapload of boxes from the house. I counted the other day about 5 boxes, maybe more, of Christmas decorations. A few boxes that contain some old glassware Im not ready to part with. A few boxes have some very nice vintage collectors dishes and serving bowls which I dont have room in this apartment to display or use. Theres the Tower of old board games. The boxes of old writings, old yearbooks, old pictures.. a box of a variety of tablecloths (which I just managed to uncover and store them in a useful spot, finally). Im not even going to go into the many many books I have, or the closets (yes plural) of clothes.
Its too much stuff, and the more I go through it.. the more stuff I get rid of..
But also the more memories it jogs.
See.. Today while sorting through some junk, I found a folded up napkin which I almost just tossed in the trash until I thought..
Wait! This is me that packed this box. I dont just throw crap in my boxes. Why in the hell would have I kept a worn out napkin?
So I unfolded the napkin. I probably havent unfolded that napkin in a good 10 years. I honestly had forgotten that it even existed.
On the inside of the napkin were some scribbles. Real handwriting. A boys name. His phone number. Some doodles. And his email address.
The memories of Rudy came back to me. I remembered how it felt when he gave me his contact information and how excited I was. He was finally interested. In me!
I remembered so vividly that feeling of joy, and the wonderful but brief times wed spent together that I immediately looked him up on Facebook to see if he was there. He was, and his status was single.
I took it as a sign that fate was smiling on me, and I added him. The joy of the memories flooded through my mind as I waited to see if hed accept the connection. Most of the memories were remembering the emotions of our previous connection, how well wed gotten along..
Then he accepted the connection, and the fantasy of him suddenly became more real. The joyous memories suddenly leaked into the bad ones. The romanticized memories faded into more honest accounts of exactly how we were.. how I was back then..
I remembered what it was I liked about him. He was opinionated. Harsh, yet sweet. He had standards. Strict high standards. Aspects of personality that I rarely find attractive anymore, and aspects of personality that rarely change in a person.
Was this even going to have a hope of working?
    Our History:
One of my first relationships in college was with this guy Id met in a theatre production. He was geeky, smart, and suave. He knew all the right words, and myself being quite innocent didnt help much. I thought he hung the moon, and ignored nearly everything else about him. He seemed to know much more than I did, so when he said something I believed him.
About a month into our relationship, he took me to his dorm. It was an all male dorm, and Rudy was his Resident Adviser, RA. He introduced me to Rudy, and for the first time since getting together I wanted to be single.. instantly.
Upon meeting me, Rudy gave me this look of pity and disgust and he tried to hide it, but it was obvious he was judging me solely by my taste in men. He did not like the guy I was seeing, and since I was with him, I was obviously dirt. He wouldnt even speak to me. It shocked me out of my love-blinders.
The guy was seeing was bad news. Not obviously bad news at the start, but bi-polar with a pathological liar streak. It wasnt until I met his friends, that I really understood just how much untruth he sold me. Needless untruth, simply to make himself look smarter or more interesting or just for shits and giggles. Hed even told his entire dorm quite a few untruths about me.. none of which were flattering.
Rudy doesnt remember this btw.. not even years later when I did finally get his number.
I lost track of Rudy after that for a few years, until we both were working at Wal-Mart. Hed walk by my section and Id flirt with him. Day after day I sought him out and we began to develop a friendship. Id worked on charming him for months before he finally invited me to a small party at his place.
I cant remember where in this story he wrote down his info on the napkin. I just remember it as a badge of success. A badge of approval. Of being worthy. It was a happiness built on hope, joy, and forgiveness.
The party was small. Just a few of his friends and I hanging out and chatting. It was a great night. I was the last to leave, and we had a short but amazing make-out session.
We saw each other a few more times before he left for a new school in Colorado, but nothing more than that ever happened.
We wrote (email) back and forth for months while he was away. He told me all about his school, work, and efforts. I told him all about mine. I waited for his...

The Sugarplum Favor (A Christmas Story) by Tad Williams

Danny Mendoza counted his change three times in while the teacher talked about what they were all supposed to bring for the class winter holiday party tomorrow. It was really a Christmas party, at least in Danny's class, because that's what all the kids' families' celebrated. Danny had his party contribution covered. He had volunteered to bring napkins and paper plates and cups because his family had some left over from his little brother's birthday party with characters from Gabba Gabba Hey on them. He'd get teased about that, he knew, but he didn't want to ask his mother to make something because she was so busy with his little brothers and the baby, and now that Danny's stepfather Luis had lost his job they had a Money Situation. Danny could live with a little teasing.
Danny was going to buy a candy bar for his mother, one of those big ones. That was going to be his Christmas present to her and Danny knew how much she'd like it -- he hadn't just inherited his small size and nimble fingers from her, he'd got her sweet tooth, too. And she had just been talking about the Christmas a few years ago when Luis had a good job with the Sanitation Department and he'd brought her a whole box of See's chocolates. Danny knew he couldn't match that, but the last of the money he'd saved up from raking leaves in the neighborhood and walking old Mrs. Rosales' wheezy little dog should be enough to buy a big old Hershey bar that would make Mama smile. No, what to get wasn't a problem. The thing that had him thinking so hard as he went down the street at a hurried walk, hands shoved deep into his jacket pockets, was whether he dared to get it now or should wait another day.

In Danny's San Jose neighborhood the Mercado Estrella was like an African water hole, not only a crucial source of nurture but also the haunt of the most fearsome predator in his 3rd grade world. Any stop at the little market meant he risked running into Hector Villaba, the big, mean fifth-grade kid who haunted Danny's days and often his nights as well. Danny couldn't even begin to guess how much candy and other goodies Hector had stolen from him and the other kids over the years, but it was a lot -- Hector was the elementary school's Public Enemy Number One. About half the time his victims got shoved around, too, or even hit, and none of the grown-ups ever did anything about it except to tell their humiliated sons they should learn how to fight back. That was probably because Hector Villaba's father was a violent, drunken brute who didn't care what Hector did and everyone in the neighborhood was as scared of him as the kids at school were scared of his son. The last time someone in the neighborhood had called the police on Hector's dad, all their windows had been broken while they were at church and their car scratched from one end to another.

Danny was still trying to make up his mind whether to risk stopping at the market today or wait for better odds tomorrow (when class ended early because of the holiday) when he saw Mrs. Rosales walking Pinto, her little spotted dog. He almost crossed the street because he knew she'd want to talk to him and he'd spent a lot of time doing that already last week when went to her house to get Pinto nearly every day. He was too close, though, she'd seen him, and Jesus hated being rude to old people almost as much as he hated it when kids lied, or at least that was what his mama always told him. Danny wasn't expecting much from Santa anyway, but if Jesus got upset things would probably be even worse. He sighed and continued toward her.

"Look who's here!" Mrs. Rosales said when she saw him. "Look, Pinto mi querida , it's your friend Danny!" But when he waved and would have passed by she told him, "Hold on a moment, young man, I want to talk to you."

He stopped, but he was really worried that Hector and his friends might catch up if he stood around too long. "Yes, Mrs. Rosales?"

"I short-changed you the other day." She took out a little coin purse. It took her a long time to get it open with her knobby old fingers. "I owe you a dollar."

    "Really?" Danny was astonished.

She pulled out a piece of paper that looked like it had been folded and unfolded a hundred times and handed it to him. "I know boys need money this time of year!"

He thanked her, petted Pinto (who growled despite all their time together, because Pinto was a spoiled brat) and hurried toward the market. Another dollar! It was like one of those Christmas miracles on a television show - like the Grinch's heart growing so much it made the x-ray machine go...
