The Japan Preview: 10/10 Edition (Pokemon wins, KH, Macrosst)

Summary & A Look Ahead:
Although there were some notable releases this week in Japan, including a Kingdom Hearts game for DS, Red Dead Redemption for the HD systems, and a new Ken to Mahou for PSP & PS3, Pokemon Black / White remained the top selling title of the week in Japan by a rather comfortable margin even though the title dropped off a fair amount from last week. As with the rest of the world, software sales should begin to pick up over the next few months as Final Fantasy XIII, Kinect titles (X360), Kirby, DKC, Mario Sports Mix, and Mario Collection (Wii), Monster Hunter Portable 3 (PSP), Gran Turismo 5 and Move (PS3) release in Japan. October and early November are still pretty quiet in Japan for hardware sales, but after that point hardware will generally lift even without major software pushes from seasonal lifts. Nintendo and Sony also have some special hardware skus / bundles releasing at various times - notably for the 25th Mario Anniversary (for Wii & DS) and Gran Turismo 5 - which should increase hardware sales substantially.
On the preorder front, the major games for the upcoming shopping season continue to see steady increases. Super Mario Collection is actually trending rather similarly to Super Mario Galaxy 2. Ten days ahead of release the game has about 120,000 preorders. With steady preorder increases over the next week the game could reach 175,000 - 225,000 preorders, and open to 250,000 to 350,000 units week one, which would be quite similar to Super Mario Galaxy 2. Gran Turismo 5 continues to grow at a remarkably steady pace, and now stands at 165,000 preorders with three weeks until release. The GT5 preorder figures are for the game only, and do not include the PS3 + GT5 bundle. Given that, Gran Turismo 5 will probably end up with 250,000-300,000 preorders just before release, plus whatever the bundle does, to open to perhaps 500,000 week one (including bundles). Kirby's Epic Yarn has about 40,000 preorders with several days before release and will likely open to 100,000 units or so as Nintendo titles have a tendency to double final preorder values if they aren't frothingly anticipated like a Smash Bros. or a Zelda title. Capcom's Monster Hunter Portable 3 for PSP has 940,000 preorders (!) with two months until launch yet - we may be looking at a Dragon Quest / Pokemon type launch in December for the title. That said, the fan base is more dedicated now - and so the pattern should be far more front-loaded than previous Monster Hunters for PSP.
Understanding the Japanese Preview:
Rather than saying x game for y platform sold between 20,000 and 28,000 units as in the past, the preliminary data will be broken down into charts by platform. Within these charts, there will two additional categories besides the rounded sales figure under sales. On the left will be low end depicting the lowest amount the title likely sold for the week, while to the right will be high end depicting the highest amount the title likely sold for the week. As always, this data is preliminary, and therefore, not final, but it is based on a sample. The varying platform market share the sample represents is why consistent sellers like Wii Fit Plus do not always appear in the preliminary data. Sales for this report are for the week ending October 10, 2010.

Figures are listed by the age of the platform, for the top twenty sku information that we recieve early.

Wii Software - The last two major pushes of Wii software are just about drying up in Japan. In May-July Dragon Quest Monsters: Battle Road Victory, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Wii Party, and Sengoku Basara 3 all pushed Wii to figures comparable from the middle of 2009. The pre-2010 push of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Taiko, Mario Kart Wii, Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit Plus all continued to perform well into 2010 too. With the exception of Wii Party though, those pushes have just about ended. Fortunately for Nintendo, October-January looks fairly strong, with Super Mario Collection, Last Story, Mario Sports Mix, Kirby's Epic Yarn, DKC: Returns and some minor third party titles set to push Wii. Essential titles to the Wii library will revive a bit over the period as well. This will probably be the last year in Japan that Wii doesn't drop below 10,000 units per week though if Nintendo doesn't drop the Wii price in 2011. In addition to Wii Party, NSMB Wii, Wii Fit Plus, Mario Kart Wii, and Super Mario Galaxy 2 should be over 5,000 units for the week. Expect Wii hardware sales to remain in the 12,000 to 16,000 unit range for the week.
PS3 Software - The PS3 had a pretty good week for western-published fare in Japan. F1 2010 is a racing title from Codemasters, Red Dead Redemption is a Rockstar game, and Hawx 2 is Western. Even Dead Rising 2 has a western feel to it even though it is from Capcom. The Macross game is a bit of a tracking nightmare as it is part movie / part game - and can be used / viewed as either or both, meaning that stores beyond...
