Banned Book Week is coming up on September 25, so its time to celebrate our favorite challenged/banned books: the Twilight Saga. Although there have been many, many attempts to ban Twilight from schools and libraries, eventually most people grab a clue (or actually read the books). Heres how one source discussed it last year:
Vampire novels have been a target for years and the Twilight books are so immensely popular that a lot of the concerns people have had about vampires are focused on her books, said Barbara Jones, director of the associations Office for Intellectual Freedom.
According to the group, Twilight complainers say the books are too sexually explicit, unsuited to age group, or have offensive language.
Since the books are set in high school and have been written largely for a late teen audience, the complaints seem to be off-base.
They also seem a little odd since Meyer was brought up as a Mormon and abstinence is a major theme of the books.
So talk with your friends, teachers, librarians or local bookstores and see if you can schedule your own Banned Book event near you!

In case you missed it, the darling Mackenzie Foy has apparently* been cast as Renesmee:

And, Maggie Grace (Shannon Rutherford, Lost) has been cast as Irina:

*According to the mighty Twilight Lexicon, Summit has specifically stated that they are not confirming Mackenzie Foy as Nessie at this time. Uh oh. As we all remember with casting for Alice and Emmett, Summit is the worlds most difficult negotiator, so heres hoping things work out for the best for everyone involved.

Twilight Lexicon: This just in from Summit
The Denali Coven is comprised of Christian Camargo (THE HURT LOCKER, Dexter) as Eleazar:

    Casey LaBow (Moonlight) as Kate:

Mia Maestro (Alias, POSEIDON) as Carmen:

    MyAnna Buring (DOOMSDAY) as Tanya:

as well as previously announced Maggie Grace (Lost, TAKEN) as Irina.

TNS Note: Remember that Benjamin, from the Egyptian coven, has already been cast: Rami Malek, who also played the pharoah in the first Night at the Museum film. Expect every entertainment publication the world over to cover this story of the Denali Coven being cast. Heres a few of the first which have been published so far:
Variety: Mia Maestro, Christian Camargo, Casey LaBow and MyAnna Buring have joined the cast of Summit Entertainments The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1.
The four thesps will play members of the Denali Coven, considered cousins of the Cullens and the only other vegetarian vampires
Bill Condon will helm, with Melissa Rosenberg penning the script. Meyer will produce along with Karen Rosenfelt and Wyck Godfrey.
Camargo was last seen in The Hurt Locker, while Buring is best known as one of the stars of The Descent.
Maestros credits include Poseidon and Alias, while LaBow was recently seen in Skateland.

Empire: You might remember from Graces casting story that the Denali is the only other group besides the Cullens that have pledged to stay vegetarian, and not feed from or hunt humans. Theyre led by the Spanish couple Carmen (Maestro) and Eleazar (Carmargo).
But thats not to say the coven is entirely friendly to our heroes. Buring and LaBow are joining Grace as a trio of Russian sisters, with Burings Tanya rivalling Bella for Edwards attention. LaBows Kate, meanwhile, can produce electric shocks. And the whole clan at one point refuses to fight the Volturi, thanks to a longstanding beef with Jacob and the werewolves, but they do eventually help out.
Buring has a little bit of experience with vampires, having appeared in (whisper it) Lesbian Vampire Killers, though she also has the much more effective horror tale The Descent to her credit. LaBow is a veteran of short-lived US vampire series Moonlight and Maestro dealt with action and danger on Alias.

Hollywood Reporter: Buring and LaBow will join the recently cast Maggie Grace as a trio of Russian vampire sisters of the Denali coven. Buring is playing Tanya, a rival to Kristen Stewarts Bella for the attention of Edward (Rob Pattinson), while LaBow will play Kate, who has the ability to produce an electric current that can shock opponents. (Grace is playing villainous Irina.)
Maestro portrays Carmen and Camargo is Eleazar, the two Spanish heads of the coven, which in the Twilight universe is the only other non-human-feeding vampire clan besides the the Cullen clan.
A November start is being prepped.
The first of the Breaking Dawn movies is slated to be released in theaters Nov. 18, 2011, with the second one coming Nov. 16, 2012.
Buring (pictured left), repped by Ken McReddie Associates and Elevate Entertainment, also appeared in Neil Marshalls...

Midnight Syndicate Gives Scary a Soundtrack

  • Oct 11, 2010 from fitzwillie(GeekDad)
fitzwillie It's Halloween which means Zombies & music by Midnight Syndicate
Unless you hang around haunted houses, you might not be familiar with the group Midnight Syndicate by name. If youve ever been to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios, watched any number of horror movies, attended one of Hugh Hefners infamous Halloween parties or watched any number of television programs focusing on the macabre or supernatural youve most likely heard Midnight Syndicate. For added geek cred, back in 2003 they hooked up with Hasbro & Wizards of the Coast to create the first official soundtrack for Dungeons & Dragons. For over 13 years they have been providing the soundtrack for scary, and now theyve made a movie.
The music of Midnight Syndicate (Edward Douglas & Gavin Goszka) is what you would expect from music tailored to horror movie soundtracks and Halloween. Its haunting, full of dark orchestration and moody synthesized creepiness. Once you listen, you immediately feel like you are being slowly hunted by a ghost with a penchant for human flesh. Its not the kind of music that makes you think of ghosts that just want to make pottery. Its the kind of music that goth kids listen to while doing their homework and brooding.

Edward Douglas & Gavin Goszka of Midnight Syndicate
Not to pigeon-hole them too much, but this is pure Halloween music. Midnight Syndicate will not be on my iPod (actually I have a Creative Zen) but it will be played in my garage while Im handing out candy to kids. It will be played at Halloween parties, at the aforementioned Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios and as the soundtrack for their new horror film, The Dead Matter. However, after talking (via email) with Edward Douglas its well understood that the group is just content being considered pure Halloween music, hell, theyve made a living off it thus far. Plus, Easter music just doesnt have as many practical applications.
As for The Dead Matter, its an homage to classic slasher films for sure. Co-Produced by Robert Kurtzman (creator of From Dusk Til Dawn,) and written & directed by Edward Douglas, The Dead Matter as Edward calls it is somewhat family friendly with a PG-13 rating and is perfect for Halloween viewing. On a side note, I have to mention that its also co-executive produced by my very own second cousin Robert Mann, which means he coughed up a large check. Furthering the family connections, this interview was set-up by his sister-in-law Sarah Mann. I think I got that right.
Back to the movie, I wouldnt call The Dead Matter totally family friendly, but the tweens shouldnt have too much of a problem with it. The movie has a heavy dose of vampires, ancient artifacts & walking dead. Cant really go wrong with all that in a Halloween movie. That was one of the things I spoke to Edward about, in the conversation below.
Geekdad: What led you to produce Halloween music, its a very specific genre isnt it?
Edward: The idea behind Midnight Syndicate was to create these soundtracks to imaginary films. CDs that transport the listener to a movie or a world of their own creation. Ive been fascinated by horror and the supernatural for as long as I can remember so most everything I do creatively drifts towards the darker and more fantastic end of the spectrum. Hence, Midnight Syndicates predominantly horror and supernatural themes. Because of the themes and nature of our music (instrumental with sound effects) we knew from the beginning that it would make for perfect Halloween atmosphere. Another thing was that when we started in 97, there were no good quality Halloween music CDs out there mostly just Monster Mash compilations and re-recorded cheesy sound effects cassettes.
There was a real demand for something new (and of good quality) from Halloween aficionados, Gothic music fans, haunted houses, amusement parks, party planners, and folks who enjoyed decorating their houses for trick-or-treating. We filled that void and its really allowed Midnight Syndicate to grow over the years and become a part of the holiday. Many people may not realize they are listening to us but if you go to Halloween stores, haunted houses, Halloween events at amusement parks like Busch Gardens, Six Flags, Cedar Faire parks, or Universal Studios during this time of year theres a good chance youll hear our stuff.
Geekdad: Speaking about Halloween and scary events, what scares you, like really scares you?
Edward: The real world. Between things like terrorism and some of the not-so-good changes in society, it can be a pretty scary place at times. That is why everything I do creatively is about escapism. I want to create music, movies, and stories that take you away from the real world (if only for a few hours.) Midnight Syndicate is all about the fantastic side of horror, things that may or may not be, exploring the secrets of the night that spark our imagination.
Geekdad: Tell me about The Dead Matter. What was it like making a horror movie, as fun as it looks?...
