    Ye Giant Nokia X6 Review

  • Jul 27, 2010 from clintonjeff(Clinton Jeff)
clintonjeff We werent too sure what to make of the Nokia X6 when we first heard about it.

At first glance, it seems to be an upgraded Nokia 5800, wrapped in a prettier package. And that comparison has been made by a lot of people I know.
However, Nokias first Symbian Capacitive touchscreen phone was honestly, quite a bit of joy to use.
Read on for our review of the 16Gb variant of the Nokia X6.
Note: Since the UI on the Nokia X6 is so similar to the N97 Variants and the 5800, we have linked to certain posts where needed, instead of repeating ourselves here.
The Nokia X6 is a pretty powerful device. Its feature set is quite similar to the current Nseries flagship Nokia N97 Mini, just lacking a feature or two. It boasts specs such as:

    3.2 16M-color TFT Capacitive touchscreen; Scratch-resistant glass display at 360 x 640 pixels
    Symbian S60 5th edition
ARM 11 434 MHz CPU, 128 MB of SDRAM memory
5 Megapixel autofocus camera with Carl Zeiss Lens and Dual-LED flash
Widescreen VGA video recording at 30fps
Quad-band GSM with Dual-band 3G with HSDPA support
Wi-Fiand A-GPS inbuilt; Ovi Maps with Free Navigation
Comes with Ovi Music Unlimited Service (India Only)
16GB onboard memory; Unfortunately does not support microSD
TV out through standard 3.5mm Audio Jack
    FM, Bluetooth(with A2DP) and USB v2.0
    Landscape on-screen virtual QWERTY keyboard
Proximity sensor for screen auto turn-off and Accelerometer sensor for automatic UI rotation and motion-based gaming

So as you can see, the X6 is a pretty feature-rich device for its price range. You can read the full list of features on the Nokia X6 Specs Page.
The X6 measures 111.0 x 51.0 x 13.8 mm and weighs in at just 122 grams, which is pretty compact. Weve sized it up against the Nokia N97 Mini, and against the Nokia N97.

Not petite, but not too large, atleast. The phone feels great in your hand.
Build Quality is pretty meh. Its not anywhere close to an Nseries device, nevermind an Eseries device. Theres lots of hard plastic around. The Back panel creaks and doesnt seem to close quite well enough, and removing it is quite a scary experience (youll always think you might break it). Wed say the build quality is okay. Itll stand a beating, like most Nokias can.
    Firmware:
Its worth noting that the Nokia X6 in this review is on firmware version 21.0.004 which is the latest at the time of this posting. Some Features might be added or improved in later versions.
    First Impressions :
Wed also like to recommend reading our First Impressions of the Nokia X6, so that you know how or if our opinions changed from then to now.
    On with the pictures!
    Front View:
The front of the Nokia X6 has a 3.2 TFT Capacitive touchscreen.

Ive been told the screen is scratch-resistant glass but it feels more like hard plastic. Its easier to keep clean than the N97 variants and previous Nokia touch devices though.

This is the 16GB variant of the X6, so its a uniform black monochromatic color scheme all around.

On top, the X6 has its earpiece and front facing VGA camera for video calls. Theres also a proximity sensor cleverly hidden. The proximity sensor shuts off the screen as you place the screen near your ear when making a call.

Underneath the screen are hardware menu and calling keys. Pity they arnt touch sensitive though, because it really takes away from the touch interface of the device

The keys light up when used. The Menu key acts as a notification light and breathes or blinks every so often to remind you that the device is switched on. When you have a missed call or new text message or email, the light blinks more often to notify you. Strangely though, this feature is off by default, so you have to go into your settings to switch it on.

The Capacitive screen makes a world of difference to the Symbian^1 UI on the device. Atleast, when using it. Remember to check out our detailed post on Capacitive vs Resistive Touchscreen to know the real advantages and our opinion.

Theres a touch-sensitive media key on the top right side that provides you quick access to the Music player, Image & Video Gallery, sharing functions and Web Browser

The X6 also has the same Contacts Bar (upto 20 contacts and 4 app shortcuts) homescreen that the 5800 has on its newer firmware. Unfortunately it does not have the widgetised homescreen of the Nseries touch devices.
    Back View:
The back panel of the Nokia X6 is really its flimsiest part. Its quite frightening to take off the panel because you literally have to peel it off the device. And when you place it back on, theres still a bit of give.

Weve tried it on two X6 devices and noticed the same annoyance. So yes, that back panel is definitely not something youd want to mess with. But since the X6 has no microSD card support and the average person only has one simcard, you wont really need to take off the back panel for any reason other than changing the battery perhaps.

Theres also the 5 Megapixel Carl Zeiss lens at the back, with its dual LED flash and a...

Customer ReviewsOnly acceptable in the USAThis is a good product, it's well made and allows you to place a useful number of liquid-gel items into the bag securely since it uses a zipper rather than one of the "zip lock" seals that you'd use with an ordinary plastic bag. However, if you're considering this purchase for a trip abroad, you should beware. Two days ago as I was getting through security at Heathrow, the security people held me up for over 15 minutes while they lectured me on proper safety precautions, including the fact that they can't accept one quart bags that have zippers rather than the "zip lock" seal. I'm inclined to think that this particular group of security people were just having a bad day (and so, in turn, was I), but you should probably keep one of the disposable quart "zip lock" type bags handy in case you go somewhere besides the US.Over pricedThere is nothing wrong with this item, but you can get a kit with products at Wal Mart for a quarter of the cost. Don't bother with this.Perfect ! Sturdy and Large Perfect !After struggling with zip quart bags from the grocery store, I decided to give this a try. Wow ! It's large and roomy and extremely sturdy. I think eventually frequent travellers will give up on the cheap zip bags and invest in these type bags. They even stand up nicely in the bathrooms of hotels, etc.
Well worth the money. One less hassle for packing and at the Security Checkpoints.Fly bagThe bag is good, but the labeling is a little misleading. The stitching color is the only difference in all of the bags and calling it a pink scissors insert is misleading.Nice bag, but the bottles leak. When I initally received this in the mail I was very excited and started thinking about all of the people that I could buy this for. The bag, eye mask and the ear plugs are all well made. However, the bottles are too stiff and the cap didn't close properly which meant that my shower gel ended up leaking everywhere! I ended up tossing the bag and the big mess that it created. I ended up contacting the company and they refunded my money, but wish that I had the bag and non-leaky bottles instead! If the leaky bottles could be fixed they'd have a great product.

I didn't get a post up on Wednesday. In my defense, it's because I was writing and testing and the drinking that took place along with that made me too tired by the time I needed to edit and such. But, we now have a game for How I Met Your Mother, and it'll go up next Wednesday. :) Normal0 falsefalsefalse MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Sunday: Sons of Tucson (S01E10): Interesting type of dog racing, LoL. Ron took Robbie to a strip joint?? The conversation between the middle brother and the girl got way-awkward when the older brother tried to help (and yes, I have forgotten their names for the most part. again). As soon as the stool pulled up, I knew that the girl was going to end up spinning the older brother! I wonder how much of a process it was to cover Ron in beads, LoL. I kinda like how $1,000 is Ron's going price, regardless of the other half of the bargain.Kate Plus Eight (S01E03): The family got some chickens. 36 acres, eh? My DVR really did a poor job recording this episode... the audio skips in and out about every third minute for a few seconds. I don't know that I understand why Kate wanted to have a manual for how to run her own place, LoL. Strange fashion with Mady & Cara, LoL.Monday: The Secret Life of the American Teenager (S03E06): Adrian's mom calling Adrian's dad over and over was funny and dumb. I like how Ricky's mom was trying not to pry but when Adrian said it wasn't Ricky's, she sat down, LoL. I kinda want Adrian to miscarry... I think that would be a good issue to have on this show. It made me laugh that Anne thought Ashley might have been pregnant. I don't know why Ashley told Anne about Adrian. Ben's awkwardness is amusing. I love that Madison KNOWS she can't keep her mouth shut. I think Betty is cheating on Leo. Reuben freaks me out with how happy he is that Adrian is going to have the baby. I can't believe Madison is talking to Grace about rules for Jack to live with Tom. Way to send George home, Adrian! New girl this week for Ricky. Cake Boss (S03E09): "the chicken store" ?? Nice little side story about the first location and the "old neighborhood." I love a good sub sandwich, so watching them build that 6-footer from scratch was awesome. Timeline: it's Easter. Last week was Mauro's doctor appointment. Zeppoles looked neat, and fun little history on why and how. Cold cut pie looked really neat... not sure how in love with it I'd be, but it sure sounds interesting. Only two weeks a year... wow. I'd like to see what other specials they only put out for short periods of time. I don't know how I feel about showing television where the secret recipe book is kept, but it was kinda cool that we saw some of the pages. That sandwich cake looked SO REAL. I like watching Anthony's lessons. Huge (S01E03): The larping thing made for some great jokes. Okay, apparently the fat camp borders a tennis camp. What do the cabin counselors do all day? We never see them outside of those spaces. Strange scene where the one kid was trying to get his counselor to talk to Alistair about his BO and then decided that he wants to do it anyway. I know that Will was just trying to help Becca, but I think she took the ideas and made them a bit broad. hahaha, the tennis kids thought Amber belonged at their camp! Why does the Director need another issue (love)? She already has enough going on. Interesting yet not moving campfire activity. At least the "scenes from the next" look good! Tuesday: Not this week Wednesday: Hot in Cleveland (S01E05): Betty White is my hero. Melanie weirded me out with her theming names for her party foods. I really liked Victoria's dress at the end (the pink and white). Elka's comment about posting the video on youtube was excellent. Minute to Win It (S02E02): a dating couple tonight. they're wearing purple. Kim & Aaron. he has yellow belts in six different areas... ridiculous. Game 1: Candelier: use paper plates and empty soda cans to build an inverted pyramid 5 levels high, don't mess up. The soda cans are now labeled with Minute to Win It logos. She got it, and worked pretty fast! Game 2: Backflip: put some pencils on the back of your hand, flick them up, then catch all of them. Move on and add the previous batch to the new batch, so by the 5th time it's a large number...
