5 Green Products: Green Halloween Treats (Organic Lollipops) to Zoe Organics Handcrafted Skincare

  • Oct 10, 2010 from ecochildsplay
ecochildsplay 1. Green Halloween Treats: YummyEarth Organic Lollipops
There are a lot of wonderful ideas for greening Halloween. From reverse trick-or-treating to trading junk candy in for good organic goodies, there is a lot you can do to make this holiday still full of childhood joy without limiting your childs trick-or-treat bag to recycled pencils.
After all the Halloween scares of my youth involving razor blades in candy, parents are hesitant to accept homemade treats. A great alternative is to hand out organic candy.

YummyEarth Organic Lollipops are made from real fruit extracts and are gluten and corn free.
    Ingredients
Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Organic Tapioca Syrup, Non-gmo Citric Acid, Organic & Natural Flavors (Watermelon, Lemon Oils, Pomegranate, Mango), Organic and Natural Color, Red Cabbage, Purple Carrots.
Would I buy this product? Yes, and I do. My kids really like these lollipops, better than the organic YummyEarth Organic Gummy Bears. I like that they are on a stick which makes me worry less about chocking hazards compared to organic candy drops.
    2. This Little Piggys House
Any parent knows that a large cardboard box is a childs best toy! This Little Piggys House takes this concept one step forward by actually making a house designed by architects (who happen to be parents) from cardboard. It assembles quite easily and is worth hours and hours of entertainment.
Once upon a time there was a family of four little Piggies. Mama and Papa Piggy sent the three older Piggies out into the world, but they missed Mama and Papa Piggy. So the three Piggies built their homes just down the street. This Little Piggy wasnt old enough to follow his three brothers, and he looked out the window and saw his brothers houses made out of straw, sticks, and brick. He couldnt wait to have his own house, so Mama and Papa Piggy helped him build his own house out of cardboard.
Weve reviewed other cardboard houses before, but I prefer This Little Piggys House. The blank cardboard inspires more creativity than kits that already have an outline of decoration to be filled in like a coloring book. My daughter has found that water colors are the best way to decorate, and she has filled our houses flower box with paper flowers.
This cardboard house is quite large (my six-year-old could crawl inside). It would provide a great place for children when they need an enclosed place to feel safe and secure. It will provide a place your child can call his/her very own. Even though the size is designed for toddlers, my nine-year-old was extremely interested in its construction and decoration, and it inspired dramatic play.
Would I buy this product? Yes, if it was cheaper. I think that $60 is a bit steep for cardboard. I would buy this toy if it was half the price, but it is much larger than other cardboard play houses we have reviewed. Plus, I love the fact that it will easily be recycled when the time comes. My kids are certainly happy with our This Little Piggys House! In fact, my daughter just said, This is one of the coolest things we have gotten for the blog. Dad called it super cool, until he heard the price and then said he should go into the cardboard box business.
    3. Bioserie Bioplastic Case for iPod Touch
You may be wondering why I am reviewing an iPod touch case on a blog for green parenting, but our familys iPod Touch is indispensable. From listening to music to learning apps, I have no problem allowing my children to play with this tech toy.
Like any expensive gadget children are allowed to use, an iPod touch needs protection. Bioserie has created the worlds first Ipod touch cover made from scientifically advanced bioplastic materials derived entirely from plants instead of petrochemicals.

Bioserie iPod Cover consists of a unique blend of biodegradable and environmentally friendly components (100%), all derived from plants and annually renewable natural resources
Cleverly placed discreet feet on the sides and corners protect your iPod Touch?s glass screen from touching surfaces during facedown placement.
Sleek and Slim, Provides protection without bulk
Contains Ingeo biopolymer, under license from NatureWorks LLC, derived from plant sugars and made in the USA.
It does not hold dust or stick in your pocket like silicon cases and the fine texture pattern on the back improves grip.

This cover fit perfectly and snapped right into place.
Would I buy this product? Yes. It costs about $30, which is a bit pricey, but I would gladly spend the extra money for the protection of our iPod touch, especially one made from bioplastics.
    4. Eco-Friendly Stationery Snails Pace
In this day and age of emails and texting, written correspondence has fallen to the wayside. The Monks at Abbey Press have created a line of eco-friendly stationery and wrapping paper made in the USA from 100% post-consumer fiber Forest Stewardship Council paper and printed with soy inks.
Drawing on the monks 143 years of printing expertise and a long history of...

Halloween: History, Fun Facts, and Resources to Plan Parties and Make Decorations

History and Fun Facts about Halloween
Halloween wasnt always the silly child-centered holiday that it is today. It had some ritualistic, religious and serious roots, beginning as early as the 1st century AD. Read on to learn more about this increasingly less-spooky holiday including how it began, what it is today and how to make the most of Halloween this year.
    Who originally celebrated Halloween?
It is thought that the Romans and the Druids were the original celebrators of Halloween. The Roman celebration took place on October 31, and was held in honor of the goddess of fruit trees, Pomona. An ancient gathering of Priests in England, the Druids, later added the lord of the dead, Samhain, to the list of honorees on October 31 and November 1. These groups of people believed that on October 31, there were hoards of ghosts, spirits, witches, goblins and evil apparitions surrounding them. The celebrations of Romans and Druids were centered around a day of sacrifice, while surrounding themselves with cats, which were believed to be holy animals.
    Why do we celebrate Halloween?
In the Middle Ages, the Roman Catholic Church decided to make the pagan holiday into a Christian holiday. It was at this time that the purpose of Halloween became a day to remember and pray for saints that had passed away. They renamed November 1 All Saint Day, and October 31st became the All Hallowed Evening.
    What year did Halloween start?
Halloween first began around 10 AD, in the area that now belongs to the country of Ireland. As mentioned above, the Druids celebrated the holiday on October 31st because this date marked the end of the harvest season, which they considered to be the end of their year. The end of October for them was what New Years Eve is throughout the world today.
Where did the name Halloween come from?
The name Halloween was originally used long after the day had been celebrated as a pagan holiday. The Roman Catholic Church adopted the celebration as a Christian holiday in the 7th century, and from thereon called the day before All Saints Day (November 1), All Hallows Eve. The origin of the words All Hallows came from Middle English Alholowmesse (or All-hallowmas), which meant All Saints Day. This word was modified to All Hallows, and thus, the day before All Hallows, or All Saints Day became known as All Hallows Eve.
    How to make Halloween decorations?
    1. Halloween Ghosts Make the head of the ghost first by crunching up a ball of toilet paper. Cover the toilet paper with a tissue, gathering the tissue underneath the ball and tying it with a piece of string or a rubber band. Turn the ghost over and hang from the ceiling or rest on the table. Scary!
    2. Glowing Ghosts Place an activated mini glow stick inside a balloon and inflate the balloon. Cover the balloon with a white napkin or white pillowcase. Secure the white cloth to the balloon using string or double-sided tape. Hang outside somewhere so that the decoration eerily moves in the wind.
How can I make an alcoholic punch for Halloween?
    1. Sewer Punch Mix 1 bottle vodka, 7 cups fresh orange juice with lots of pump, 2 liter bottle or dr. Pepper or Coca Cola, Ice. Serve with ice in a punch bowl. The mixture is a filthy shade of brown and will gross out all your guests!
    2. Bath Scum Punch Mix 1 can frozen lemonade concentrate (mixed with proper amount of water, 2 liters Sprite or 7 Up and 1 bottle vodka. Remove gallon of rainbow sherbet from the freezer. Thaw and stir the sherbet until the mixture turns brownish grey and disgusting. Return the gallon to the freezer to refreeze before the party. Just before the party, place the bowl in its location and add scoops of the sherbet so that they float in a grayish mass on the top of the punch. Serve while solid.
What are some good Halloween games?
    1. Witch Hunt
How to play Witch Hunt? Cut out paper witch hats and hide them around the house. Cut out enough hats so that each child can find between 3 and 6 hates. Color one of the hats a different color. The person that finds this hat wins the grand prize. Give out another prize for the person who finds the most hats. Give out small prizes to all the children playing the game.
    2. Icky Food Guessing Game
How to play the Icky Food Guessing Game on Halloween? Prepare 5 paper bags by lining them with plastic bags inside. This will keep the food from seeping through the opaque paper bag. Put one food in each of the bags.
    Bag 1: mashed bananas (brains),
    Bag 2: peeled grapes (eyeballs),
Bag 3: wet pretzel rods (soggy bones),
    Bag 4: spaghetti cooked (intestines),
Bag 5: dried orange peels (dried/dead skin).
Let children take turns guessing what is in each bag. For an extra challenge, make the children remember which bag contained which item. At the end of the taste, the child that has written down the correct foods in the correct order wins a prize.

ANTM: Furstenberg is Fabulous! is a post from: Celebrity News | Celebrity Gossip | BuzzHollywood.com
Greetings Gasmii! P-Baby here with this week's installment of America's Next Top Model or as we've come to see Tyra's It Girl Who Goes On To Obscurity/VH1 Reality Show. And to all the naysayers who claim, "But P-Baby, plenty of Top Model girls have gone on to find success," I have this to say. The day I can refer to an ANTM girl by her first name only without the Top Model disclaimer, a la Cindy, Linda, Naomi, Christy, and Claudia, then maybe Tyra will get a pat on the back and a cookie. But for now, she gets nothing. NOTHING! (Side note: I mean, girlfriend really did it to herself. If she had named her show something less egotistical, such as America's Next Random Face in JC Penny's Catalogue, then maybe my expectations would be lower.)

So this week, the girls cruise around Venice Beach being all touristy and small town, amazed at the sight of people on bikes and walking dogs. Anamarie is not impressed because she sees dogs and bikes and homeless people all the time, making her a worldly traveler. Anamariebelieves her own hype, telling us her New York attitude makes her awesome.

The girls walk in contrived groups of four and coincidentally run into each other on the boardwalk or whatever it's called at Venice Beach. I grew up going to the Ocean Cities of New Jersey and Maryland so it's a boardwalk. They annoyingly greet each other like long lost sorority sisters and immediately start getting harassed by the Taliban.

Lucky for them, they live to see another day as it's not the Taliban but rather a Venice Beach icon named Harry Perry who just wants to play them some music and show them the way to their new digs. Turns out they are standing right in front of their shiny new glass house.

Commence shrieking for next ten minutes as the ladies run around utterly euphoric at the sight of mediocre twinbeds and a bunch of Italian Vogue magazine covers. This is ridiculous for two reasons. 1. The only people who should be ecstatic with joy is Kayla because poor girl slept in a sleeping bag until 13 and Kendal who just informed us of living in a mobile home. You know Jane's Ivy League ass is already on the phone with Daddy drawing up plans for construction of her own private wing of the house. 2. None of these girls will ever be on the cover of Italian Vogue. Ever. Period.

As usual, Tyra has plastered her image all over the house as well. I will not screen capture this because that's exactly what the beast would want. Other features of the house include a runway in the living room and another room on the top level full of sand. While fun and interesting in theory, I feel as though the sand room's initial charm will wear off when the girls inevitably start drunk peeing in it after a Franzia Friday binge.

Chris and Ann head to the roof for an impromptu girl chat session where Chris finds out Ann has a very specific type of man she wants to sink her claws into.

Well, Ann, now I'm intrigued. Tell us more. Exactly how many hobos have you notched onto your bed post?

I kid, Gasmii. Ann hasn't fucked 60 hobos. In fact, 60 is just her age limit for potential mates. See, that's perfectly normal. What's not normal, however, is that on top of being 60, he's got to be a fire-spitting warlock who can also make sushi.

More bonding in another part of the house as Sara, Anamaria, and Jane sit on the beds and talk about weight issues. It seems Anamaria used to be "thicker" at 135 and now weighs 110 pounds. If bitch is measuring 5'7", that still puts her 13 pounds under the minimum weight for her body, and this isn't the short model cycle, so she's gotta be taller than that. In conclusion, Anamaria is too skinny and if she wasn't such an entitled twat, I'd offer her some of the Halloween candy I have sitting in a pumpkin shaped candy dish on my coffee table.

Anamaria's explanation is that she is on a "calorie restricted" diet. You and your rib cage don't fool me. In these here parts, we call that anorexia.

More getting to know each other and I'm ready for the photoshoots, hair, and make up to begin. Christ, girls. Don't you realize you have an entire season to bore us with your inanities and vapid melees? Kayla asks if there are any other gay people in the house and the answer appears to be no, though Kendal's wheels may be spinning.

The first piece of Tyra Mail arrives and all the models squeal like tweens waiting for that shitstain Bieber to make an appearance. Don't worry, though. We'll get a cameo from another annoying tween star later in the episode.

The mail cryptically informs the girls that their "rise to the top begins in Hollywood. Fuck off, Tyra." Well, it really says Love, Tyra, but since she seems to sever ties with every winner of every cycle, it may as well say fuck off. More screaming...
