Halloween: History, Fun Facts, and Resources to Plan Parties and Make Decorations

History and Fun Facts about Halloween
Halloween wasnt always the silly child-centered holiday that it is today. It had some ritualistic, religious and serious roots, beginning as early as the 1st century AD. Read on to learn more about this increasingly less-spooky holiday including how it began, what it is today and how to make the most of Halloween this year.
    Who originally celebrated Halloween?
It is thought that the Romans and the Druids were the original celebrators of Halloween. The Roman celebration took place on October 31, and was held in honor of the goddess of fruit trees, Pomona. An ancient gathering of Priests in England, the Druids, later added the lord of the dead, Samhain, to the list of honorees on October 31 and November 1. These groups of people believed that on October 31, there were hoards of ghosts, spirits, witches, goblins and evil apparitions surrounding them. The celebrations of Romans and Druids were centered around a day of sacrifice, while surrounding themselves with cats, which were believed to be holy animals.
    Why do we celebrate Halloween?
In the Middle Ages, the Roman Catholic Church decided to make the pagan holiday into a Christian holiday. It was at this time that the purpose of Halloween became a day to remember and pray for saints that had passed away. They renamed November 1 All Saint Day, and October 31st became the All Hallowed Evening.
    What year did Halloween start?
Halloween first began around 10 AD, in the area that now belongs to the country of Ireland. As mentioned above, the Druids celebrated the holiday on October 31st because this date marked the end of the harvest season, which they considered to be the end of their year. The end of October for them was what New Years Eve is throughout the world today.
Where did the name Halloween come from?
The name Halloween was originally used long after the day had been celebrated as a pagan holiday. The Roman Catholic Church adopted the celebration as a Christian holiday in the 7th century, and from thereon called the day before All Saints Day (November 1), All Hallows Eve. The origin of the words All Hallows came from Middle English Alholowmesse (or All-hallowmas), which meant All Saints Day. This word was modified to All Hallows, and thus, the day before All Hallows, or All Saints Day became known as All Hallows Eve.
    How to make Halloween decorations?
    1. Halloween Ghosts Make the head of the ghost first by crunching up a ball of toilet paper. Cover the toilet paper with a tissue, gathering the tissue underneath the ball and tying it with a piece of string or a rubber band. Turn the ghost over and hang from the ceiling or rest on the table. Scary!
    2. Glowing Ghosts Place an activated mini glow stick inside a balloon and inflate the balloon. Cover the balloon with a white napkin or white pillowcase. Secure the white cloth to the balloon using string or double-sided tape. Hang outside somewhere so that the decoration eerily moves in the wind.
How can I make an alcoholic punch for Halloween?
    1. Sewer Punch Mix 1 bottle vodka, 7 cups fresh orange juice with lots of pump, 2 liter bottle or dr. Pepper or Coca Cola, Ice. Serve with ice in a punch bowl. The mixture is a filthy shade of brown and will gross out all your guests!
    2. Bath Scum Punch Mix 1 can frozen lemonade concentrate (mixed with proper amount of water, 2 liters Sprite or 7 Up and 1 bottle vodka. Remove gallon of rainbow sherbet from the freezer. Thaw and stir the sherbet until the mixture turns brownish grey and disgusting. Return the gallon to the freezer to refreeze before the party. Just before the party, place the bowl in its location and add scoops of the sherbet so that they float in a grayish mass on the top of the punch. Serve while solid.
What are some good Halloween games?
    1. Witch Hunt
How to play Witch Hunt? Cut out paper witch hats and hide them around the house. Cut out enough hats so that each child can find between 3 and 6 hates. Color one of the hats a different color. The person that finds this hat wins the grand prize. Give out another prize for the person who finds the most hats. Give out small prizes to all the children playing the game.
    2. Icky Food Guessing Game
How to play the Icky Food Guessing Game on Halloween? Prepare 5 paper bags by lining them with plastic bags inside. This will keep the food from seeping through the opaque paper bag. Put one food in each of the bags.
    Bag 1: mashed bananas (brains),
    Bag 2: peeled grapes (eyeballs),
Bag 3: wet pretzel rods (soggy bones),
    Bag 4: spaghetti cooked (intestines),
Bag 5: dried orange peels (dried/dead skin).
Let children take turns guessing what is in each bag. For an extra challenge, make the children remember which bag contained which item. At the end of the taste, the child that has written down the correct foods in the correct order wins a prize.

Have A Look At The Black Christmas Motion Picture Overview Now

  • Sep 26, 2010 from bestofthenets(Marilyn Lee) in Technology
bestofthenets This fun fright-fest was a pleasant surprise from what I was actually expecting. This is an additional horror remake (from the folks behind Final Destination great film), but unlike so many others; it did manage to come up trumps; such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. This can be a remake of Bob Clarkes 1974 classic slasher movie, Black Christmas; which in fact came four years before John Carpenters Halloween. Some fans lay claim that it was the original slasher movie.
Externally, this looks like just one more of your fundamental theres a psycho hacking up a lot of pretty girls, who are running up the stairs rather than from the door, and to some extent that is correct, its the way this is conveyed which is interesting and enticing to watch.
The story: crazed killer, Billy Lenz, runs away from his psychiatric ward and is motivated to really make it to his childhood home, where he was mistreated, by Christmas. Problem is, it is years later and the house is now a Sorority house. Its Christmas Eve and a whos who of teen/horror girl stars are there to welcome him, including Melissa (Michelle Trachtenberg , Buffy the vampire slayer fame), Heather (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Final Destination 3), Dana (Lacey Chabert, Mean Girls) and Kelli (Katie Cassidy, When a stranger calls remake.)
This film is essentially pretty good, it features a continuous feeling of being observed that runs right through it and adds a sparkle to the scares, and the tension is kept high. The actresses, although spouting some awful lines at times, also say some good ones. The acting is excellent, and because the majority of the actresses are stars, and many of them horror stars, the audience does not guess which one will make it to the rolling credits. The story-line builds well, and theres a mounting tension, as the killer first telephones the girls, and then begins to do away with them.
A very similar storyline to the original Halloween, with a killer coming home for the holidays, theres also many similar P.O.V shots of the killer, observing the girls throughout the house. The Christmas theme bleeds in nicely with the plot, and it comes across in places (especially, the flash-backs to Billy Lenzs childhood) like something, director, Tim Burton, would dream up. The motion picture gets darker and darker as we move through it, with some very violent scenes, and the music by Shirley Walker is great; capturing horror and Christmas all in one twisted melody. Also, the use of red and green lighting throughout (owed to Christmas) is very cool, and generates a great atmosphere.
As a result of it being set in a Sorority house, and this no longer being 1974, some of the dialogue just does not cut it. I cannot imagine many of these girls staying in the house with a crazed serial killer, just because they cant locate their sorority sister, believable in 2007 sad, but true. There is, regrettably, the customary shower scene, but it is used for scares, not thrills, and so it works.
Immediately you can tell, this isnt your usual run of the mill slasher, it actually has a back story, and we do find ourselves caring for a few of the characters, for example, Kelli, played by Katie Cassidy is great; plus if you hated Dawn in Buffy the vampire slayer you are likely to love this film.

THE HAUNTED BOY, The Secret Diary Of The Exorcist. Based On The Real Exorcist Diary By Rev. Raymond Bishop, S.J. A new paranormal documentary film from The Booth Brothers, (Spooked, Children of the Grave, The Possessed, Death Tunnel as seen on SyFy, NBC Universal, Sony Pictures).
    REVIEW:
With all the creepy exorcism sensationalism going on lately, it was due time for a non fiction piece to arrive on the scene that wasnt all B.S with cleverly edited hand held camera tricks. In fact, every time I turn on the TV, another expert is visiting distressed old buildings claiming to be able to capture disembodied spirits or evil entities. The thing I love about the Booth Brothers excursions is that they dont claim to be expert ghost hunters, but they are expert filmmakers. Usually they enlist the aid of noted experts to accompany them while they shoot, educate and dig into the history or the locations they visit. Its all done beautifully, hauntingly and usually leaves you with a sense of dread long after viewing.
This latest offering from the spooked team takes on a rather cautious tale of a boy who was the original inspiration for the film The Exorcist. A real tale that overshadows The Last Exorcism 10 to 1 with encounters that are truly frightening.
The coverage stems from true events, true testimonies as the team braves the eerie original locations with quite a few harrowing moments themselves. The original tale that inspired the film the Exorcist was actually based on a true exorcism event that occurred back in 1949. This event received further credibility when the original diary of the event was uncovered that details the frightful moments from the archives of Rev. Raymond Bishop. The DVD I received contained a printed copy of this very diary for those who want to read long after, though its the film itself that will send chills down your spine.
As all their previous projects, the Booth team lights up the screen with there flavorful brand of editing using graphics, staged footage and of course the on scene documentary footage that they based the whole film on. As we learn about the haunted boy who was documented as being possessed even at the level of the Roman Catholic Church, we discover a dark entity, demons and past tales that will scare the church right back into ya.
The crew visits 3 locations reported to be where the boy received exorcism treatments. St. Louis, Missouri which houses an old asylum turned into apartment buildings still to this day does not house occupants on the 5th floor as recommended by the local priests. A floor that perhaps contains some remnants of evil itself is explored with some interesting footage caught on tape. What is most frightening is the visit to the previous exorcised boys house now owned by new neighbors. The room which is in renovation proves to be a visit you soon wont forgot. A resident ghost hunter, the film crew and a physic all visit this house and let the cameras roll. Not only is the visit frightful but the captured EVP to audio words device pulls up some pretty crazy stuff. Accompanied by a masterful Saint score, the material sets a pretty dark mood to latch onto.
As the film rolls on, we are told about some of the original furniture deemed haunted that was removed from the locations and sealed away in a wooden box. This box now sits within a military facility never to be opened again. I found that bit of information rather unique and concerning that so much trouble was invested into a material object to be kept under wraps and careful watch. As we learn more about the boy, it appears that every...

Publisher: Ballantine Books

About this book
From the inimitable Anne Tyler, a rich and compelling novel about a mismatched marriage—and its consequences, spanning three generations. They seemed like the perfect couple—young, good-looking, made for each other. The moment Pauline, a stranger to the Polish Eastern Avenue neighborhood of Baltimore (though she lived only twenty minutes away), walked into his mother's grocery store, Michael was smitten. And in the heat of World War II fervor, they are propelled into a hasty wedding. But they never should have married.Pauline, impulsive, impractical, tumbles hit-or-miss through life; Michael, plodding, cautious, judgmental, proceeds deliberately. While other young marrieds, equally ignorant at the start, seemed to grow more seasoned, Pauline and Michael remain amateurs. In time their foolish quarrels take their toll. Even when they find themselves, almost thirty years later, loving, instant parents to a little grandson named Pagan, whom they rescue from Haight-Ashbury, they still cannot bridge their deep-rooted differences. Flighty Pauline clings to the notion that the rifts can always be patched. To the unyielding Michael, they become unbearable. From the sound of the cash register in the old grocery to the counterculture jargon of the sixties, from the miniskirts to the multilayered apparel of later years, Anne Tyler captures the evocative nuances of everyday life during these decades with such telling precision that every page brings smiles of recognition. Throughout, as each of the competing voices bears witness, we are drawn ever more fully into the complex entanglements of family life in this wise, embracing, and deeply perceptive novel. From the Hardcover edition.
