Real Housewives of New Jersey: The Second World War Begins [Recaps]

  • Jun 29, 2010 from gawker(Gawker) in Entertainment
gawker On last night's wander into the black forests of the Garden State, we saw a sad woman at a crossroads. We saw an angry woman coming undone. We saw women who were trying to be better, but failing. This was something of a transitional episode. We were setting the scene for what's to come in one week's time, an epic blowdown of magisterial proportions. It will involve shrieking and women falling down and hyperventilating, and, like any true blowdown, the police. But for now, there is only this. The waiting. The anxious rumbles before the quake. The chicken skin-yellow sky of the terrible storm swirling our way. Let's stand in the eerie quiet and see what we can see.
Ah yes, what's that there, can you make it out? It's the arched roofs and gilded doors of a very fancy shoppe, an emporium perhaps. Aha! It's the Posche store, where one can get a very "classful" Posche automobile. The steering wheel is conveniently located in the middle, so you can drive in England and the US and A. Do you like windshield wipers? Then you will love windshield cats, who lick all the water off, eventually. They live in the engine and eat spark plugs. A Posche is the finest off-brand luxury combustion device since the Marseillesdees, a French vehicle that runs on orange peels and sour wine. Who runs such a fancy dealership? Why Kim X, of course, a woman with a wispy white dead dandelion tuft of hair and a sharp, ambitious face. While she does bask often in the riches that the Posche dealership affords her, she wants more. She wants in with the Housewives, so very very desperately. She wants in so badly that she's been playing both sides of the field. She cozies up to Jacqueline, Teresa & Co. and cackles up to the notorious bug-witch Danielle. Kim X. is an amateur, so you'll forgive her for forgetting that she is being filmed by television cameras, which steal your essence and then rebroadcast it into America's homes. She does seem to forget that, so she thinks it's totally cool to just be completely two-faced. Oh Kim X. Ohhhh Kim.
So first in this episode she drove her Posche Flamingo coupe over to a restaurant where Jacqueline and Teresa were eating. "Wait, is that centimeters or inches," Teresa was grumbling, while Jacqueline held a ruler to her forehead. Jacqueline frowned, "It's centimeters, honey." Teresa was about to throw a small fit but then she looked up and saw Kim X. coming, so she slapped the ruler out of Jacqueline's hand, hard, and rose to say hello to Kim X. Jacqueline sulked and kissed her boo-boo and searched the table for her sippy-cup. Kim X folded her long Jack Skellington limbs into her chair and, as the air conditioning blew parts of her hair off, wasted wishes, she told them about a big event she was planning. See Posche not only sells various wheeled machines, they also sell clothing. Very interesting, bold swaths of cloth that the ladies of Franklin Lakes use to lash around their murderous frames in various creative ways. When Kim X. gets a new shipment of cloth from the mysterious, ghostly old steamer ship that appears out of the mist and docks at Elizabeth on the same day every year, she throws a fashion show party to get all the girls interested. (She needs desperately to sell as many of the clothes as possible, if only to make the terrifying trip into the ship's metal belly worth it, with the screaming and moaning she hears from down dark, dripping corridors and the lone, withered old man with no eyes who greets her when she raps three times on the ship's door.) It's quite a big event held at one of North-Central New Jersey's 36,000 event spaces, and all the ladies in town want to come. This year, Kim X. would really like it if Jacqueline and Teresa would go.
But they, of course, are not so sure. See, Kim X. is friends with Danielle and Danielle will probably be at the fashion show. Jacqueline is scared. Twice a week she's been talking with that nice lady, Dr. Karen, whose office is pleasant and has lots of bright, soft toys that she can play with. One day Dr. Karen leaned in close to Jacqui and said in her soothing ladyvoice, "Jacqueline honey, why don't you tell me about these pictures that you drew?" and she pointed to all the pictures that Jacqueline had drawn in art class, of a fissure-thin raven woman with bug eyes and red (blood?) spewing from her mouth, a thick black crayon halo surrounding her. And, after having been too scared to tell her for weeks, Jacqueline finally said to Dr. Karen, in a quiet voice, "That's the mean lady Danielle..." And Dr. Karen took in a quick breath, something was wrong. But then the moment passed and Dr. Karen was calm again, comforting again. "I see. And did this Danielle... Did she... hurt you, Jacqueline?" And Jacqueline nodded, squeezing her favorite Puffalump tighter. "She hurts everyone." And, when Jacqueline was sitting in the waiting room with Teresa while Caroline had grownup talk with Dr. Karen, she could hear from behind the closed door Dr. Karen saying...

An amazing interactive (newspaper) iPhone ad [video] Posted: 05 Oct 2010 03:19 AM PDT AXA have created an excellent newspaper ad, that shows the new age of advertising at its best. Im a big fan of interactive advertising, and what happens when ads meet social and this is an excellent example of that. The video below shows the AXA ad in action, which directed the reader to place their iPhone over an empty space on the page : Given that AXA was Belgiums first insurance company to launch an iPhone app, its fitting that they would use such a unique method to announce it. This is one of the first ads of this kind that Ive seen, where you see a real consideration of the user journey. They havent just added on an element to integrate with mobiles, but have actually built it into the story of the ad itself. There are some that might dismiss this as gimmicky, but any advertiser would give their left arm to have consumers engage with their ad in this way, and literally stare at it for nearly a minute. This is no small feat and is yet another great example of brands exploring interactive or social advertising. It also shows the potential to bring the user on a 360 journey. Where an ad would typically give you just one chance to get in front of your consumers, this ad included a link at the end of the demo, to download the AXA app for free. This encourages long-term customer retention and shows the ability to seamlessly integrate offline and online media. Skype Now Available On Android Posted: 05 Oct 2010 02:31 AM PDT After making its way to the iPhone, getting its toes wet on Android in a deal with Verizon, Skype has finally made its way to the Android Market and is available to download today. The new Skype app allows free Skype-to-Skype calls, supports instant messaging on both a one-to-one basis or with a group of people. All of this is supported on both 3G and WiFi, allowing users to make cheap phone calls in the process. Skypes subscription plans provide an unlimited amount of calls, almost replacing the cellular function of the smartphones it runs on. Currently, the app is supported on Android 2.1 devices and above, it is not available in China or Japan and in the US, users can only make calls over WiFi, we assume this could be something to do with its Verizon partnership. To download the app, head on over to skype.com/m or search the Android Market. Early reports suggest that the Samsung Galaxy S is having trouble running this app. Are...

Posted: 08 Oct 2010 03:14 AM PDT [TNW Apple] When you buy a new Mac it always seems so fast, at first. Know the feeling? Then, after a week or two suddenly you find yourself waiting for another bouncing icon or a spinning ball. Is it a conspiracy? Is there a time-release poison-pill that activates after a week and screws up your memory chips? Nah, it is all you. Really. But dont panic. Here is a list of things that slow down your mac and some easy solutions and tips to speed it up. Oh, and some misconceptions at the end about speeding up Macs that might be useful if you think you know all about optimizing already. Clean up desktop If you are like me you use your desktop as the single most repository for files you dont know what to do with. Screenshots, documents, downloads, all that stuff. It turns out that every file you keep on your desktop is treated like a separate window. The more files you keep there the more effort your PC has to spend on managing that. The trick is to clean up every now and then. So how do you do that? First of all: create a folder called Desktop Archive and place it on your desktop. Every day at the end of the day file everything you can file and delete what you can delete and dump the rest in your Desktop Archive. There, You solved it. The other thing you can do is specify a download folder for Safari. Go to Settings->General and select a specific folder in Safari which is not your desktop. Quit Open Applications Mac OS X does a great job of managing your open applications. That doesnt mean you should just open all applications and expect everything to work just as fast as without any open applications. Memory if finite, applications perform background tasks and yes, sometimes applications quietly start deteriorating while you think they are just patiently waiting for you to return. Take a look at the applications you have launched and if you arent planning on using them within the next 4 hours do yourself a favor and close them. Prevent Applications from opening in the first place Go to System Preferences->Accounts->select your own user account->Login items. There you will find a list of all visible and hidden applications that launch when you start up your computer. Chances are you can safely remove half of them. If you are not sure type the name into Google and see what the community says about them. Bonus tip: while you are there you might as well add one or two applications you always want open. I added Mail and Safari because I just always need those...

Alexandre Herchcovitch - Spring 2011 Backstage Beauty

  • Sep 13, 2010 from stylelist(StyleList) in Lifestyle
stylelist Filed under: Cuts & Style, Makeup, Fashion Week

Alexandre Herchcovitch's Spring 2011 collection played matchy-matchy, with lip and hair color that matched shoes and tones of outfits and custom-mixed nail polishes that coordinated perfectly with the hue of fingerless gloves.

MAKEUP: Gordon Espinet for MAC Cosmetics
HAIR: Rolando Beauchamp for Bumble and Bumble
NAILS: Pattie Yankee for Dashing Diva
    SNAPSHOT: Color Block Chic

THE SCOOP: Alexandre Herchcovitch's Spring 2011 collection was awash in bright shades of 80's cheer that followed through in the beauty look with matching Crayola lips, finger tips and pulled-back hair that allowed color to take center stage.

Shockingly bright colors were the highlight of the face, with lips seemingly lined and painted-in with primary shades. "Lips are the accessory to the outfit," said Espinet. A vitamin E stick was used as a lip base in order to give the lips a stark opacity, and the rest of the makeup gently sculpted the bones and contours of the face.

Hair was dampened with spray product for a sleek, lustrous look, and pulled back into a top-of-the-head pony that then wrapped into braided hybrid bun. Pins were pushed only half-way down for an unexpected spate of texture and intrigue, and just before the models hit the runway it was decided to spray paint their buns to match their dresses.

Heavy color continued with the nails that matched fingerless gloves, which Yankee custom-blended in a frenzy backstage to match each outfit. "Alexandre had picked the nail polish shades he wanted from looking at the website, but then just saw them in person and said they weren't quite right. So I just had to blend all the colors right now!" Yankee told StyleList.

GET THE LOOK - MAKEUP: All products by MAC Cosmetic. Blend Sculpt Foundation with Mixing Medium to sheer down coverage, and apply to even out skin tone. Use a darker powder shade to subtly contour prominent areas of the face like cheekbones, the nose and lip ridge area. Line lips and fill in with bright and brand new Chromagraphic Pencils.

GET THE LOOK - HAIR: Saturate strands with Holding Spray for a sleek, high-gloss finish. Pull up sections on top of the head, elastic into the place, and then braid and wrap each section around the crown to form one big hybrid bun. Pin hair down, making sure to push pins only half-way in to add interest and texture. Spray with colored hair paint if you dare!

GET THE LOOK - NAILS: All nail shades were custom-blended from Dashing Diva polishes to match the gloves and detail colors of outfits.

THE WORLDS THAT OUTGREW THEIR STORIES: Two Roads to Intellectual Property Success

  • Sep 19, 2010 from graspingwind(John Ottinger III) in *
graspingwind If youve been even dimly aware of the world around you for at least the last decade or so, youve probably heard the term intellectual property bandied about. If you havent, or arent sure what it means, an intellectual property, as defined by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) relates to items of information or knowledge, which can be incorporated in tangible objects at the same time in an unlimited number of copies at different locations anywhere in the world. The property is not in those copies but in the information or knowledge reflected in them. Intellectual property rights are also characterized by certain limitations, such as limited duration in the case of copyright and patents.
Think of it this way: Star Wars was a really cool movie released in 1977. Add to that five more movies, Clone Wars, Force Unleashed, all those books for kids and adults, comic books, action figures, and so on, and Star Wars is an intellectual propertyand what some corporations would refer to as a global brand.
In more and more instances as everyone from filmmakers to video game studios look to the success of brands like Star Wars or Harry Potter, theres a sense that everything is more than the limits of its initial incarnation. Every movie, book, or game is at least a potential intellectual property.
For about the last decade and a half I was tasked with helping to maintain and develop a number of successful, long-running intellectual properties. Part of my job was to look far beyond each individual book or game product and both back over the existing canon and forward toward the lasting implications of every decision. Two of the most successful properties in the Wizards of the Coast (via TSR) portfolio are the Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance settings. To me these have been, for years, two sides of the same coin.
Both are long-lived, successful properties, sub-brands of the Dungeons & Dragons game, that have been brought to life in a number of media from pencil-and-paper role-playing games through best-selling novel series, and on to video games, animated films, comic books, etc. But what separated them, at least in my mind, is the initial approaches from which they were born.
For me, Faern (the Forgotten Realms setting) was a world created first, and characters and stories were added later. Krynn, meanwhile, was a setting created for the original Dragonlance Chronicles novel and D&D adventure module trilogy, and was further developed only in the service of a continuing series of sequels and prequels.
Ive seen other properties take both approaches. The larger Star Trek IP grew out of the original TV series, so is similar to Dragonlance. World of Warcraft is a setting created to house your MMO character, and is open to a continuous stream of new content to keep you paying your subscription fee. In that way at least its like the Forgotten Realms, right?
If for nothing else but affirmation, I went to the fonts of all (or at least mostif I dont qualify that at least a little, Jeff Grubb and Margaret Weis will kill me!) FR and DL wisdom: Ed Greenwood, creator of the Forgotten Realms setting; and Tracy Hickman, co-creator of Dragonlance.

I agree with this assumption, Ed Greenwood told me. I know that the Realms was created with this intent, because Im its creator and deliberately took this approach.
But Tracy wasnt as willing to let me off that easy. He told me he wasnt sure my assumption, is entirely accurate in the case of Dragonlance. It is true that the story was the foundation of Dragonlance and came out of the personal desire of both my wife [Laura Hickman] and myself to use role playing games as a medium of storytelling. You have to remember that at the time adventure games were largely of the kill the monster, take its treasure, buy more weapons to kill bigger monsters variety. We wanted to introduce meaning into gaming through story.
In practice, however, it became a chicken and egg sort of issue. The game was being developed ahead of the storywhich actually adversely affected the story itself. It wasnt until we started writing story ahead of game ... during the break between Dragons of Autumn Twilight and Dragons of Winter Night ... that things actually smoothed out.
Still, I think when you look at the relative timelines at work, my basic assumption bears out.
Ed Greenwood elaborated: [The Forgotten Realms world] began as a shared setting for individual fantasy short stories I was writing (at the age of six, so none of the tales are, ahem, classics) in the same way as Fritz Leibers later Fafhrd & the Grey Mouser stories were then being published in (the Ted White era) Fantastic magazine, which I was then reading as issues appeared: Episodes centered on recurring characters (in my case, the fat, aging, wheezing swindler of a merchant, Mirt the Moneylender) that happened to all be set in the same world. [The world itself] was in the background to the reader of just one story, but someone who read them all...
