    HUFFPOST HILL - JULY 23, 2010

  • Jul 23, 2010 from huffpolitics in Politics
huffpolitics Our cup really overfloweth on Fridays. Whether it was Zach Wamp hinting that some states may secede if a duly elected president and Congress continue to do their jobs or James Inhofe reiterating his position that global warming is a hoax, we really had our pick today. 2/3rds of HuffPost Hill look forward to seeing everyone at Netroots Nation this weekend. The other 1/3rd will be missing out on all the fun, scouting locations for John Kerry to park his yacht. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Friday, July 23rd, 2010:

PAY CZAR FAILS TO RECOVER BILLIONS IN TAXPAYER-FUNDED WALL STREET BONUSES - Shahien Nasiripour apparently wants you to have a terrible Friday because he filed this: "The federal overseer entrusted with investigating Wall Street pay has declined to take action, arguing that the public wouldn't be served by going after $1.6 billion that 17 financial firms doled out to their employees in the five months after taxpayer-bailouts began in the fall of 2008. Among other duties, Congress granted Kenneth R. Feinberg, the Obama administration's "pay czar," the legal authority to attempt to recover excessive compensation that may have been contrary to the 'public interest.' Though acknowledging the massive payouts were 'ill-advised' and exhibited 'bad judgment' -- some bankers were paid more than $10 million, he said -- Feinberg refused to rule that any of the massive payouts went against the public's interest." http://huff.to/cZHwnV

P STREET PROJECT LAUNCHES - Hills staffers, meet Shaunna Thomas, liberal lobbyist for the newly formed P Street Project, whose creation will be announced tomorrow at a panel at Netroots Nation. Well, we just announced it here, but you get the point. P Street is connected to the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, which raised more than a million bucks last year by operating outside the orbit of the White House and its allied progressive institutions. Thomas and P Street have been the organizing force behind Carolyn Maloney's letter supporting Elizabeth Warren. It now has more than 60 members signed up and roughly 150,000 folks have signed a petition. It's an example of the type of inside-outside work the group plans to do. "Washington can often be such an inside game. People get cynical: 'Oh, that's never going to happen," Chellie Pingree, who worked closely with PCCC in her and Jared Polis' late push for a public option, told HuffPost Hill. "A lot of times there's a point where people feel the momentum's dead, but having people from your local community call and say do this, and here's a vehicle to do it, really gets things moving."

CHARLIE RANGEL ADDRESS ETHICS CHARGES - "The 40-year congressional veteran spoke Friday at his office in Harlem, a day after the ethics panel indicated he may have committed serious violations. The panel did not disclose the allegations and Rangel declined to elaborate. Rangel says he's pleased that the matter will be addressed before the September primary election and the November general election. He says voters in his district deserve to know the truth about the allegations. He says he's eager to be able to tell voters the results of the investigation, 'so that they would know who Charlie Rangel really is.'" http://huff.to/c7Cz8I

BILL REMOVING U.S. FORCES FROM PAKISTAN INTRODUCED IN HOUSE - The chamber might act next week on a resolution introduced last night by Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul that would, citing the War Powers Act, direct President Obama to withdraw U.S. forces from Pakistan. "The administration, like its predecessor, is misusing language in the original post-9/11 resolution to prosecute a wider regional war and Congress is sitting quietly on the sidelines. This must stop," Paul said in a statement.

The BBC has released an infographic that details the location of -- and casualties from -- U.S. drone and Islamic militant attacks in Pakistan. http://bit.ly/cCrN92

Double Suicide In Foreclosed Home? - An AP report in the Las Vegas Review Journal describes the horrific case of a mother and son who burned to death in their family home after it was foreclosed on. The incident has the hallmarks of a suicide: The pair barricaded themselves in the house and an accelerant was used to burn it down. "RENO, Nev. -- Two people found dead in a home that burned in an upscale Reno neighborhood had heavily fortified the foreclosed house, apparently anticipating the sheriff's deputies who came to evict them, police said Wednesday...Deputies serving the eviction notice Tuesday heard what they thought were gunshots after they announced themselves at the front door about 10:40 a.m. They took cover and noticed the house was on fire...No weapons were found, but investigators suspect an accelerant was used inside the house, Nuttall said. He said the bodies were found next to each other...

    The Screwfly Solution

  • Oct 05, 2010 from retroist in Entertainment
    retroist Year: 2006
    Director: Joe Dante
    Writer: Sam Hamm
Starring: Kerry Norton, Jason Priestly, Elliot Gould, Linda Darlow, Brenna OBrien
Oh yessomeone watched us, saw the worst in usdecided the world would be a nicer place without us. Maybe it will be.
As I mentioned in the Howling review I have a great deal of admiration for Joe Dante, he is easily one of my favorite directors. As well as being a huge horror film fan he always comes off to me as being a kid at heart. Look at some of the non-horror films he has directed to see what I mean. Explorers, Innerspace, Matinee, Small Soldiers, and Looney Tunes: Back in Action have all been directed by Joe Dante in addition to quite a bit of television work including Eerie, Indiana (1991). So being such a big fan I hope you can see that I was quite ready for his two entries in the Master of Horror series, Homecoming, and the Screwfly Solution. I was not disappointed by the films and I doubt you will be either.
The film starts in the suburbs of Houston, Texas in the month of July where we see Joe setting about to what looks like the chore of watering his backyard lawn. Betty, who is trimming the hedge that separates their properties brings up the rising heat of the morning and Joe informs her that it is a hot one already. Betty asks if Joe might want a glass of lemonade if she fixed one. He thanks her for the offer but declines politely. She crosses over to his property saying that it would be no trouble but she stops dead in her tracks. Joe with a warm smile on his face is hosing off his patio, which is coated in blood. It looks like someone has gutted an animal or something. Not noticing Bettys horror he just smiles as he goes about his task, Thanks just the same. Im fine.
We next see Joe doing more household choresthis time he is cleaning his blood splattered oven. Joe is interrupted by the doorbell and when he answers it he finds three policeman standing on his doorstep. They explain there was a call and that they need to search his home if he wouldnt mind, Joes reaction is far from troubled, he is just completely confused as to why they would be there, he invites them in and apologizes about the mess of the place. The three officers quickly find bloodstained sheets in the bedroom, in the bathroom a bloody shower curtain has been taken from its rod and placed in the corner of the room, and in the garage the officers find a workbench with three bloody corpses wrapped in plastic sheeting.
The officers arrest Joe and lead him to one of their patrol cars as they read him his rights but the lead officer just cant stand it and demands to know why he had killed his family. Joe calmly informs them that the Lord spoke to him and when he is placed in the car the officer asks what he was told, Joe, clean up this place. As the patrol car pulls away, Betty and her husband, Phil, look on in sadness at what has transpired next door. Phil shakes his head and mutters, Poor old Joe., which causes Betty to give him a look of disgust as she storms off back into their home.
In the next scene it is now August and we meet Anne Alstein(Norton), a director of a Womens Center located in Ann Arbor, Michigan as she councils an abuse victim, Brenda. A poor woman who has been beaten black and blue by her husband, we learn this is the third time that Brenda has been to the shelter. Anne wonders if Brendas sister in Florida, who has apparently offered to take her sister in, could help. Brenda tearfully explains that she cant get a hold of her sister, she has tried for over a week but every time she phones her sisters husband, Nick, answers and says his wife is out at the moment and when pressed further he doesnt know where she is but he will leave a message. This of course causes some confusion for Anne but Brenda continues and explains what scares her is that her niece lives in Florida as well and when she calls her cell phoneNick answersand repeats the exact same thing he says about Brendas sister.
Later in the evening at the Alstein house, Anne, and her daughter, Amy (OBrien), and close family friend, Bella Sartiano(Darlow) who is a staunch feminist epidemiologist, are preparing a welcome back party for Alan Alstein (Priestley), and yet another close friend, Barney Braithewaite(Gould). The two men are scientists that have been working to eradicate the canefly infestation problem in the Colombian rain forest for the past five months and are due back that evening. The television the three are watching as they prepare a cake holds their attention as a report of 150 women being publicly executed in Saudi Arabia for violations of the so-called Sharia law and we learn a similar incident occurred the week before in Iran. The television switches to a new story in Jacksonville, Florida where over 100 members of a religious group that have named themselves the Sons of Adam rallied to the support of two men convicted of killing an exotic dancer. Anne is just remarking that her clients sister lives there...

Chris Weigant: Friday Talking Points [142] -- Republican "Doggy-Doo"

  • Oct 09, 2010 from wwwma3hdnet(عبد الله) in World News
    wwwma3hdnet Chris Weigant: Friday Talking Points [142] -- Republican "Doggy-Doo" -

We're going to start off with a warning this week: this preamble section is going to be mostly shameless self-promotion and one cheap inside joke. If that sort of egotism bores the pants off you, then you really shouldn't read it at work because walking around with no pants on is likely to get you fired (well, depending on where you work, of course). Ahem. In any case, you have been warned. Skip ahead to the awards sections if you'd like, I won't mind.

We'll start out with the cheap joke, to get it out of the way. I wrote on Wednesday about a question that is becoming more pronounced, if the current polling is to be believed: "If California Legalizes Marijuana, How Will Obama React?" What I didn't include in the article, because I was trying for at least "semi-serious," was the totally-unrelated story which came out the same day. I even refrained from mentioning it when a commenter made a joke about what "joint" sessions of Congress would be like if Proposition 19 passes, I'll have you know. But it's Friday, so our seriousness bar is (as always) quite a bit lower. So here you go: in what has to be a completely unrelated item, the House announced that it has now passed a total of 420 bills that the Senate has failed to act upon. For those who just got the joke, you're welcome.

The comments on Huffington Post to this speculative piece on how the Obama administration will likely react if Proposition 19 passes were very interesting, which has caused me to dig a bit deeper into the issue. I'll be writing a followup article next week, after talking to groups as disparate as the A.C.L.U. (to clear up a few legal points) and a prominent group of "tenthers," or Tenth Amendment enthusiasts. So tune in for that, either next Monday or Wednesday.

But I have to admit, the thing that tickled my ego the most this week was getting featured not once, but twice in the same week by the venerable Andrew Sullivan, who writes the "Daily Dish" blog at The Atlantic. Now, I've always had a lot of respect for Sullivan, because he appears to be somewhat of a political mirror image of what I try to do -- he leans toward conservatism, but he is what I would call "reality-based," in that he is able to admit when the Right makes a mistake or does something stupid. Replace "conservatism" with "liberalism," and "Right" with "Left," in that sentence, and it's pretty much what I strive for.

Sullivan first ran one of my charts from my Monday "Obama Poll Watch" column, which he liked because the graph showed the similarities between Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama, approval-rating-wise. He also ran excerpts of my Wednesday column on the marijuana question. But I am not yet feeling the love from Sullivan, because he hasn't added me to his blogroll yet.

So I'm calling on my loyal readers to start an "Add Weigant to your blogroll" movement, of course! He's obviously reading my stuff, if he quotes me twice in the same week, so I think it's eminently reasonable to ask that he give his readers the option of checking out my main blog site. I invite anyone with way too much time on their hands to click on either one of the links in the previous paragraph -- and then find Andrew's email address on the page, and drop him a friendly note respectfully asking that he consider adding www.chrisweigant.com to his blogroll list. Maybe together, we can all convince him. Please be polite and respectful if you actually send him a note, though. It's certainly worth a try, since, as I said, I have a lot of respect for him as a pundit. In fact, if he adds my site to his blogroll, I promise I will reciprocate and add his to mine, as blogging etiquette demands.

See, I warned everyone this was going to be just rampant egotism from start to finish here...

But enough of this nonsense, let's get on to the week that was, starting as usual with our weekly awards.

While mostly a slow news week in the political realm, since all the Congresscritters are currently scurrying around on the campaign trail instead of doing the People's Business, President Obama did make some big news with his first meaningful veto this week. I wrote about this in more detail yesterday, but the basic upshot is that Congress quickly passed a law which flew under most folks' radar due to its technical nature, and Obama vetoed it because it may impact the growing foreclosure crisis.

Politically, a very smart move for the president. Not so much for Democrats in Congress, but we'll get to them in a moment. Salon helpfully pointed out, though, that the White House press release announcing the veto was a "dog whistle" to the Left, seeing as how it used the phrase "consumer protection" about as many times as humanly possible. For those unable to hear such ultrasonic messages, what this translates into could be summed up as: "See, Elizabeth Warren is already having an influence on President...

The Ghost Map, The Story of London's Most Terrifying Epidemic--And How It Changed Science, Cities, and the Modern World

Creator: Steven Johnson | 2006-10-19

A historical chronicle of Victorian London's worst cholera outbreak traces the day-by-day efforts of Dr. John Snow, who put his own life on the line in his efforts to prove his previously dismissed contagion theory about how the epidemic ...

Publisher: Riverhead Books (Hardcover)

About this book
From the dynamic thinker routinely compared to Malcolm Gladwell, E. O. Wilson, and James Gleick, The Ghost Map is a riveting page-turner with a real-life historical hero that brilliantly illuminates the intertwined histories of the spread of viruses, rise of cities, and the nature of scientific inquiry. These are topics that have long obsessed Steven Johnson, and The Ghost Map is a true triumph of the kind of multidisciplinary thinking for which he's become famous-a book that, like the work of Jared Diamond, presents both vivid history and a powerful and provocative explanation of what it means for the world we live in. The Ghost Map takes place in the summer of 1854. A devastating cholera outbreak seizes London just as it is emerging as a modern city: more than 2 million people packed into a ten-mile circumference, a hub of travel and commerce, teeming with people from all over the world, continually pushing the limits of infrastructure that's outdated as soon as it's updated. Dr. John Snow—whose ideas about contagion had been dismissed by the scientific community—is spurred to intense action when the people in his neighborhood begin dying. With enthralling suspense, Johnson chronicles Snow's day-by-day efforts, as he risks his own life to prove how the epidemic is being spread. When he creates the map that traces the pattern of outbreak back to its source, Dr. Snow didn't just solve the most pressing medical riddle of his time. He ultimately established a precedent for the way modern city-dwellers, city planners, physicians, and public officials think about the spread of disease and the development of the modern urban environment. The Ghost Map is an endlessly compelling and utterly gripping account of that London summer of 1854, from the microbial level to the macrourban-theory level—including, most important, the human level. Ruthless, A Memoir

Creator: Jerry Heller, Gil Reavill | Biography & Autobiography - 2007-08-28

A founder and former CEO of Ruthless Records traces his four-decade career in the music business, describing his role in the careers of such artists as Elton John, Van Morrison, and Marvin Gaye, revealing his efforts to promote the New Wave ...

Publisher: Simon Spotlight Entertainment

About this book
Ruthless tells the explosive story of Jerry Heller's alliance with Eric Wright, aka Eazy-E, one of the legends of rap music and a founding member of N.W.A., "the world's most dangerous band." As a longtime music industry superagent, Heller had the skill and insight necessary to guide N.W.A.'s cometlike rise to the top of the charts. Along the way there were raucous nationwide tours, out-of-control MTV pool parties, and X-rated business meetings. Heller held on through the brutal shocks and reversals of the Ruthless Records era, which saw the label being targeted by the FBI, and its principal artists locked in bitter conflict, until a final turnaround placed Ruthless at the top of the heap once more.Heller turns the music industry inside out, exposing its strange logic and larger-than-life personalities. Ruthless provides keen insight into the popular music scene, with an unforgettable portrait of its rollicking excesses, life-churning drama, and multimillion-dollar highs.
